‘Coast’ exhibition a success, so look out for ‘Coast2’

Four artists have, over the May Bank Holiday Weekend, staged an exhibition of their paintings in an exhibition entitled ‘Coast’.

Held at Regatta House, Cowes the exhibition’s preview evening was well attended and the artists, Chris Gillies, Carol Owen MBE, Sally Pengelly and Malcolm Winter A.G.A.v A. welcomed old and new friends with some buying from the works on show as the evening progressed.

Wide variety of styles
Most of the 51 paintings on display were based on coastal scenes with topics including Old Gaffers, Cowes Sailing, Approaching Ventnor and The Ashey Seamark. There was a choice of medium from oils, pastels and acrylic.

Some of Carol Owen’s work showed her skill when using oil on linen, whilst Malcolm Winter’s large paintings included a reminder of the days when paddlesteamers were a frequent sight off the Island’s shores, with his depiction of the PS Solent Queen in 1950 when the vessel was part of the Red Funnel fleet.

First Cowes outing for Sally
Although based in Gurnard, Sally Pengelly had never exhibited in Cowes before. She learnt fine art at college and was for a time an adult education tutor at IW College.

Evidently she likes to challenge herself by changing her painting style from time to time and this was shown in her work on display.

Of her works on show, a colourful trio of children at play plus two scenes in Cowes Yacht Haven depicting the lead up to the JP Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race were much admired by viewers.

Coast2 on the cards?
Speaking at the launch of ‘Coast’ Carol Owen said that she was impressed by the diverse styles of her fellow artists.

Chris Gillies said that he hopes the four artists will combine their talents at another time as it had proved a successful venture and Malcolm Winter added that ‘Coast2’ was certainly in the planning stage.
