Coastal erosion forces temporary closure of Compton Bay beach access steps

Urgent repair work has begun on the beach access steps at Compton Bay, following damage caused by recent coastal landslip and erosion.

The steps, located by the main National Trust car park and toilets, have shifted and buckled as a result of the coastal movement.

An OnTheWight reader has shared a photograph taken today (Tuesday) showing that part of the old section of car park is also on the verge of slipping.

Steps closed until Friday
The Isle of Wight Council says that while the steps are currently safe to use, contractors will close them from Monday 16th March until Friday 20th March to reinforce the structure as a preventative measure.

The council says the works will help ensure safe access to the beach ahead of the Easter holidays.

Access via northern end only
While the steps remain closed, Compton Bay will only be accessible from the northern end, via Compton Farm and Compton Chine.

The council is asking visitors to follow all signage, including any Path Closed signs, to take extra care along the coast, and to report any concerns to [email protected].
