Cowes to lose Post Office for two+ weeks

This in from the Post Office, in their own words. Ed

Cowes Post Office is to move to a new temporary site at Cowes Yacht Haven to safeguard a Post Office in the town in early December.

The branch used to operate from inside The Southern Co-operative Store at Terminus Road until it sold its supermarket to Marks & Spencer. For the past six months the Post Office has operated from a portable building in the supermarket car park.

Marks & Spencer kindly allowed us to be based in its car park during this time. Now the company wants its car park to be returned to its usual use and we need to vacate.

New temporary home
A replacement temporary building has been delivered to Cowes Yacht Haven, Vectis Yard, High Street, Cowes, PO31 7BD. It will be operational from 1 December at 9am.

The current branch in Marks & Spencer car park will close on 12 November at 5.30pm. Alternative branches in the area include:

  • East Cowes Post Office, 9 Well Road, East Cowes, PO32 6SP
  • Newport Post Office, 43-51 Pyle Street, Newport, PO30 1XB

Since August, Cowes Post Office has been operated by a temporary postmaster, who will continue to operate the branch from the new temporary building in the Yacht Haven. Opening hours will remain the same.

Working towards permanent solution
This is a temporary solution to maintain Post Office services in the area while we work towards a more permanent solution.

These plans are progressing well and we hope to be in a position to commence a period of local public consultation to locate to a new site soon.

Julia Marwood, Regional Area Manager, said:

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of the branch. We are committed to maintaining Post Office services in Cowes. We have been working hard to achieve this by providing two temporary solutions. We hope to soon be able to announce our proposal for a permanent Post Office at a new location in Cowes. We thank the Post Office staff and customers for their patience.”
