Flood Alerts updated for Eastern Yar and Isle of Wight coast by Environment Agency

The Environment Agency has issued updates to Flood Alerts in place for the Eastern Yar and Isle of Wight coast.

The alert for the coast reads:

Sunday afternoon’s tide at 12:00 on 11/02/2024 is higher than normal due to unsettled weather with light Westerly Force 4 winds. The weather increases tide table values by 0.34 m. The total forecast tide is 4.95 metres Chart Datum (2.21 mAOD) at Cowes. For 1 hour either side of high water, sea front roads, esplanades and car parks will flood. In Cowes, water will affect the High Street, Medina Road (floating bridge) and Sea Street (Newport). In East Cowes, sea water forced up through drains will impact the road at Albany Road, York Avenue and Castle Street. The ferry terminal car park at Yarmouth will flood and this may impact Bridge Street.
The tide levels are elevated over the next 3 days. This may cause some impacts at each high water.
If you have it, we recommend that flood protection should be installed at Medina Road (Cowes), Well Road (East Cowes), and Bridge Road (Yarmouth), 1 hour before high tide.  We continue to monitor the forecast.

Eastern Yar
The Flood Alert for the Eastern Yar reads:

Water levels on the Eastern Yar remain high. In the last 24 hours, 6mm of rainfall was recorded at Wroxall which has given the river a chance to recover.

Levels at Alverstone peaked at midday on Friday 09/02/2024 and continue to fall. Levels at Sandown are slowly falling at a rate of 7mm per hour.

Water will be ponded on low lying land throughout the river valley. Road and footpath flooding is expected.

There will be flooding of Golf Links Road and Moreton Common Road, Sandown. Ditches around Fort Holiday Park will struggle to drain.

The weather is now fairly dry over the next 3 days, but please expect the river to be higher than normal. We continue to monitor the forecast.

To reduce flood risk we are ensuring that water courses remain free of blockages. Avoid walking or driving through flood water.
