Free Isle of Wight community event to explore ageing and dementia research

Last updated:

Residents, carers, researchers and community organisations across the Isle of Wight are invited to a free event exploring Ageing and Dementia, taking place on Wednesday 18th March at the Yarmouth Community Hall (CHOYD), Yarmouth.

Island Community-Owned Research Network
The event is organised by ICORN, the Island Community-Owned Research Network, hosted by Community Action Isle of Wight, and supported by funding from the Academy of Research and Improvement.

ICORN aims to raise the profile of research on the Isle of Wight and encourage more local people and organisations to get involved.

An important topic
With a growing number of people living with dementia on the Isle of Wight, this is an especially important topic locally.

The event will bring together researchers, health professionals, voluntary sector organisations and community members to share knowledge, explore current research and discuss opportunities to work together to improve support for people affected by dementia.

Free drop-in event
The event is free and open to everyone, and there is no need to book in advance. People are welcome to drop in at any point during the session, even if they only have half an hour to spare.

The morning will include presentations and discussion from a range of speakers from the Island and the wider region, including researchers from Southampton and Portsmouth Universities and organisations working locally with people living with dementia.

What to expect
Programme highlights include:

  • Welcome and refreshments
  • Opening introductions from Sandy Ciccognani (Community Action IW), Annette Scivier (GP and lived experience) and Ciaran Lowe (Co-Lab)
  • “The Story So Far” – Maggie Bennett from Parklands and Alzheimer Cafe Isle of Wight

Bringing people together
Sandy Ciccognani from Community Action Isle of Wight said,

“ICORN events are about bringing people together, researchers, practitioners and the community, to share knowledge and spark new connections.

“With dementia affecting so many families on the Isle of Wight, this is a vital conversation for our Island.”
