The Isle of Wight saw more than 40mm of rainfall overnight, with many roads flooding and rivers overflowing.
Island Roads say they took more than 120 flooding calls over the past 24 hours.
They report a number of roads currently closed: Morton Common, Brading; Landbridge, Newchurch; Apse Manor Rd; Pondwell Hill, Nettlestone; Rectory Rd, Niton and Sandy Rd, Gatcombe. Drivers and cyclists are advised to take extra care on the roads.
Throughout the night, Island Roads also took action short of closure (usually putting out flood warning signs) at numerous locations including:
- Langbridge, Newchurch
- Apse Manor Road
- Brook Path, Shanklin
- The Mall, Brading
- Park Road, Wootton
- Long Lane, Newport
- Briddlesford Road, Havenstreet
- Marsh Road, Gurnard
- Beacon Alley, Godshill
- Ventnor Road, Whitwell
- Wallis Close, Wroxall
- Farriers Way, Shorwell
- Parkhurst Road/Horsebridge Hill
- St Martins Road, Wroxall
- West lane/ High Stret, Brading
- Forest Hills, Newport
- Broadway, Sandown
- Fairlee Road, Newport/Island Harbour Entrance
- Quarr Hill, Binstead
- Colwell Road, Freshwater
Most activity was before midnight, but it remains busy. The Island Roads teams are currently assessing sites and will re-open roads as soon as it is safe to do so.
A spokesperson for Island Roads said,
“These have been really challenging conditions and our staff – both behind the scenes in the hub and out on location – have been working hard to keep the network as safe and accessible as possible.
“However further flooding is possible in the coming days, so we would ask motorists to take additional care wherever they are on the network while these severe conditions remain.”
Weather warning
Heavy rain is forecast for later today (Monday), with a ‘Be Alert’ yellow weather warning in place from 6pm on Monday to 9pm on Tuesday.
