Islanders are being encouraged to swap the car for two wheels during June, as the Isle of Wight Council launches its new campaign, Life’s Better by Bike.
The initiative hopes to inspire residents to choose cycling over short car journeys — improving their own health while reducing environmental impact.
Cycling for health, wellbeing and the Island
The council says regular cycling helps improve physical fitness, strengthen mental wellbeing, and create cleaner, greener communities.
Simon Bryant, Director of Public Health, said,
“We know that regular cycling can help reduce stress, improve mental focus, and boost heart health.
“It’s also a great way to reconnect with nature, enjoy time with friends and family, and rediscover that sense of freedom we often lose in busy daily life.
“Life really is better by bike — and we’d love to see as many people as possible joining in this June.”
Supporting and improving infrastructure
The campaign also acknowledges that some parts of the Island are not ideal for cycling at the moment.
Some lanes and footpaths still need improvement, and the council is inviting feedback from local cycling groups to help identify priority areas for investment and repair.
Accessible cycling for all
For those worried about traffic, the council notes that cycling can offer a refreshing alternative to driving — especially during busy periods — with no queues and more freedom.
However, they also recognise that walking may be a better option for some people. The message is simple: find ways to stay active and reduce car use where you can.
Promoting routes and adventures
To support the campaign, the council will highlight family-friendly and beginner-friendly cycle routes, helping Islanders of all abilities get started.
With around 200 miles of cycle tracks, byways and bridleways, the Island is already known as a world-class cycling destination.
Share your ride
Islanders are invited to share their cycling journeys on social media using the hashtag #LifesBetterByBike and tagging the council, for a chance to be featured.
Even a short cycle can make a difference — to your health, your wellbeing, and the environment we all share.
