Bernie Quinlan secured her place in the final, after her performance at the Semi finals last Saturday. She was competing against fellow Islander, Toby Collard, and seven other comedians from the South Coast.
Bernie said,
“I was so nervous, but I knew my material well and hoped people would enjoy it.
“I was very surprised to get through!”
Routine about chocolate brands going for a night out
Bernie struck comedy gold, with a routine about some chocolate brands going for a night out, which is crammed full of confectionary based puns and sexual innuendos.
Isle of Wight Comedy fans may have seen her perform this act at the popular monthly Ballyrags Comedy Club at FuBar in Ryde (which will be continuing at the Royal Esplanade Hotel, after the sad upcoming closure of FuBar).
O’Flanagan: Bernie captivated audiences
MC and member of the judging panel, Geoff O’Flanagan said,
“Bernie captivated audiences with an act full of unexpected twists and turns that kept the room hanging on her every word.
“Her bold and original style takes comedy in a completely fresh direction, earning her a well-deserved place in what promises to be a spectacular final showdown.”
Both Bernie and Toby are regular attendees of The Isle of Wight school of Comedy, where teacher Luc Valvona has been helping shape and hone their acts.
Valvona: I am so proud of Bernie
Luc said,
“I am so proud of Bernie, when she first started coming to my classes she was so shy she could hardly get through a single line without an apology, the difference between her then and now is night and day!”
The Comedy School meet on Tuesday evenings and are set to move to The Department in Ryde, after the closure of FuBar. Contact Luc or visit the website for more details.
Other prizes
As well as the main prize, Bernie is also in the running to win the Hampshire Female Comedian of the Year, and Rookie of the year.
The Final of the Hampshire takes place on the 25th October at the Attic in Totton, Southampton.
