Isle of Wight DJ launches non-profit events to help aspiring DJs step into the spotlight

Paul Barrett, an Emergency Care Assistant with the ambulance service who performs as DJ Moomin, has set up a not-for-profit event series aimed at giving aspiring DJs the confidence to take their skills from the home into a club setting.

Paul began developing the idea in early 2024, motivated by a desire to support DJs who have the talent, but lack the self-belief to perform in front of a live audience.

Social media pressure taking its toll
His research pointed to a growing problem in the DJ scene, where the pressures of social media and the expectation to appear perfect online have dented the confidence of many aspiring artists.

For some, he found, the focus on likes and comments has eroded their self-esteem rather than encouraged them to progress.

Fruitylicious takes shape
In 2025, Paul launched Fruitylicious, a not-for-profit event designed to give those DJs a practical and supportive stepping stone. He said,

“I set up Fruitylicious, a not-for-profit event focusing on giving that helping hand.”

The first event of 2026 took place on 28th February in the function room at The Castle Inn in Newport, marking the series’ first open deck night.

A welcoming space to grow
The format gives new DJs the opportunity to play in a real event environment, building confidence and experience without the pressure of a competitive or critical atmosphere.

Paul expressed hope that those who attended came away with the encouragement they needed to take their next step.

He extended thanks to the DJs, their families and friends, and to The Castle Inn for their support in making the event possible.

If you want to get in touch with Paul about future events, you can do so through either his Fruitylicious Facebook page or his Puppa Moomin Facebook page.
