Isle of Wight libraries launch Summer Reading Challenge with Story Garden theme

The ever-popular Summer Reading Challenge has returned to Isle of Wight Libraries, with this year’s theme — Story Garden: Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors — already capturing the imagination of young readers across the Island.

Launched earlier this month, the challenge runs throughout the summer holidays and gives children up to eight weeks to complete their reading goals.

Free and accessible for all ages
The challenge is completely free and available at all 11 Island libraries, including those run by dedicated community volunteers.

It is open to children aged four and over, with a special mini-challenge for younger readers so that everyone can take part.

Each child who joins the main challenge receives a fold-out poster, and as they read books of their choice — fiction or non-fiction, old favourites or new discoveries — they collect stickers and small prizes.

Once they have read six books, they earn a medal and certificate to mark their success.

Helping children stay connected with books
The Summer Reading Challenge has long been a proven way to help children maintain their literacy skills over the break from school.

By allowing children to choose what they read, the challenge helps build confidence and encourages a love of reading, particularly for those who may be less keen to pick up a book.

Councillor Paul Brading, chair of the children’s services, education and skills committee, said,

“The Summer Reading Challenge is a brilliant way to keep children engaged and learning during the holidays.

It’s not just about reading — it’s about imagination, exploration, and confidence-building.

“I encourage every family to take part and make the most of what our libraries have to offer this summer.”

Free nature-themed activities at libraries
Alongside the reading challenge, Isle of Wight Libraries are also offering a programme of free, nature-themed activities throughout the summer to further inspire young imaginations.

Families can still sign up at any Island library.
