Opportunities for young people in the marine industry supported by Cowes Harbour Commission

Cowes Harbour Commission (CHC) celebrates its 125th anniversary by looking to the future of the Harbour and launching marine employment initiatives for young people, plus a schools’ Art Competition to imagine what the Harbour will look like in the future.

The Commission is celebrating the 125th anniversary of the first Cowes Harbour Board meeting on Wednesday 7th December.

Bursaries and apprenticeship
In honour of this milestone, a number of initiatives are planned for the following 12 months:

  • In conjunction with UKSA, CHC is offering the young people of East and West Cowes the opportunity to apply for a number of bursaries to enable Cowes residents aged 15 to 19 with financial need to see if a career in marine employment is for them.
  • New workboat apprenticeship scheme is also to be launched as an ongoing initiative, offering a new working apprenticeship with CHC supported by UKSA, enabling the successful applicant to work with CHC whilst becoming a fully qualified workboat handler.
  • To celebrate the history and the future of Cowes Harbour there will be a display in the Harbour Office depicting images and stories from the time around 1897 when the first Board was formed plus the launch of an Island schools’ Art Competition for 10 to 19-year olds to show their vision for the harbour of the future. The winning design/s will be made into a large display in the Harbour Office for the rest of the Anniversary Year and designled prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Hall: A real impetus to create innovative change
Gary Hall, CEO of Cowes Harbour Commission, said,

“Since 1897, the Commission has had at its heart the safety of the Harbour. A core focus has been also to ensure the sustainable future of the Harbour and there is a real impetus to create innovative change fit for the next 125 years.

“We are therefore excited to be launching initiatives in our Anniversary Year that speak to the future of the Harbour and marine employment which is at the heart of a sustainable future.”

Phil Hagen, Chair of the Board of Commissioners, commented,

“We are looking forward to celebrating the milestone of our 125th anniversary and the future of the Harbour by investing in marine employment and proactively working with our wider Cowes community to build that sustainable future.”
