floating bridge 6 (FB6) crossing the River Medina

Public consultation launched for Cowes Floating Bridge options

Isle of Wight residents are being asked to share their views on the future of the Cowes Floating Bridge.

The Isle of Wight council is launching a series of engagement events following last year’s Cabinet decision to replace the current chain ferry.

New strategy and options under review
Alongside plans for a new floating bridge, the Cabinet also commissioned a full River Medina Crossing Strategy.

This strategy includes an updated business case, an appraisal of options, a clear output specification, and a procurement plan aimed at delivering best value for council tax-payers.

In recent months, transport specialists have been assessing a wide range of potential solutions.

They’ve considered criteria such as affordability, environmental impact, reliability, value for money, and the need to avoid congestion on surrounding roads.

Three shortlisted options
After analysing the data and consulting with local stakeholders—including Cowes and East Cowes town councils, Cowes Harbour Commission, and councillors on both sides of the river—the following options are being put forward:

  • A new vessel: Replace the current floating bridge with a new model (FB7).
  • Modify the current vessel and/or environment: Add features such as control chains, tidal flow reduction measures, or flush thrusters.
  • Do minimum: Keep the existing bridge in service, supported by a push boat.

The council has ruled out several other ideas, including a new bridge or tunnel, a different type of vessel, or ending the service altogether.

Public consultation events this summer
Islanders can share their views through an online survey and in-person or virtual drop-in sessions.

Drop-in sessions will take place between 3pm and 7pm on the following dates:

  • 22nd July at East Cowes Town Hall
  • 23rd July at Northwood House, Cowes
  • 31st July at The Riverside Centre, Newport

Online sessions will be held on:

  • 7th August from 12–1.30pm
  • 12th August from 6–7.30pm

More details are available on the Isle of Wight council’s website.

Consultation closes in August
The consultation is being promoted across the Island, with particular outreach to regular users of the floating bridge.

The deadline for responses is 22nd August 2025.
