Duty 1st over Ryde

Red Arrows could return to Ryde for Armed Forces Day celebrations

The world-famous RAF Red Arrows could once again take to the skies above Ryde as part of this year’s Armed Forces Day event.

Their potential return would mark another milestone as the Island celebrates the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

A memorable debut in 2024
Last year saw the Red Arrows perform over Ryde for the first time, thrilling thousands with their precise, high-speed aerial display.

This June, they may be back to dazzle crowds once more, depending on final approval from the Ministry of Defence (MOD).

Reserved slot in display calendar
Ian Dore, the event organiser, explained,

“As you may have seen, there is a currently a space in the Red Arrows display season calendar, and we have the opportunity to fill it as it’s reserved for us.”

He added,

“We had hoped to go firm with this at the beginning of the year, but circumstances out of our control prevented that.”

Ian confirmed that once MOD support is confirmed, organisers can activate the safety protocols required for the display.

Rare opportunity for the Island
The RAF has offered just three Armed Forces Days the chance to host the Red Arrows this year.

Ian said,

“It should be pursued at full throttle as it’s a considerable privilege.”

The team is currently undergoing assessment in Croatia, with their first public flypast scheduled for 5th May in London.

If all goes to plan, they may be flying over Ryde on Sunday, 29th June.

Funding challenge and community support
Much of the preparation is already in place.

Ian explained,

“We’ve done all the groundwork, and the air planning is in place. However, until the MOD commits further, I am not 100 per cent sure what we are looking at.”

He continued,

“Working off the known numbers as they stand, if everyone who attended last year’s event chipped in £2, we’d be there overnight.”

Two major Island businesses have already pledged their support.

More backing from Armed Forces Covenant signatories could make the funding target more achievable.

Access and inclusivity
Ian pointed out the value of hosting a top-tier air display on the Island. He said,

“Many youngsters and families, through no fault of their own, lack the resources to visit such a dynamic air display on the mainland.

“This is about bringing excitement, history and action to our own doorstep.”

He concluded,

“The Red Arrows are more than just a display team; they are a symbol of national pride.

“If the Island’s community can help crowd-fund their appearance at Armed Forces Day, it will demonstrate that our support is not just in words but in action.”

Next steps and how to help
Details on fundraising efforts will appear on the official Isle of Wight Armed Forces Day website next Wednesday afternoon.
