Relax: Island has at least 30 years worth of burial space left

Nationally there was some concern last week that some councils in the UK were running out of spaces in graveyards, following an investigation by BBC Local Radio.

Breath easy
Those of us living on the Isle of Wight can breath easy – there’s still plenty of space left for burials on here.

The council tell us,

“We do not consider that lack of cemetery space is an issue for the Island at present and we estimate that the council has capacity for at least another 30 years based on the current rate of burials.”

Lots of land available
IWC review this on an year-by-year basis, and if they think things are getting tight, they tell OnTheWight that they hold lots of other land that could become designated as graveyards. They helpfully point out too that there are privately-run choices too.

15% burials
If you didn’t know – and why would you – the Isle of Wight council currently carries out around 150 burials a year, making up about 15 per cent of all of the burials and cremations carried out by the council in an average year.
