Spencer Woods path enhancements completed ahead of schedule

Last updated:

A popular footpath in Gurnard has undergone a significant upgrade and will reopen to the public earlier than planned.

Thanks to recent good weather and the work of local contractors Crown Park, improvements to the Spencer Woods path have been completed ahead of schedule.

Reopening Thursday
The footpath, which runs from Worsley Road down to the beach, will reopen today (Thursday).

The new works include three timber staircases connected by gravel pathways, making the route safer and more accessible through the steep woodland.

Part of wider coastal route
The project will become part of the King Charles III England Coast Path and has been funded in part by a Natural England coast path grant.

Landowner Richard Murphy, who purchased the woods with his late wife Lynda, has invested heavily in the area, planting over 500 trees and planning further improvements.

The total investment in the site is now estimated to be around £200,000.

Mr Murphy said the woodland will serve as a lasting tribute to Lynda, who originally envisioned the project.

Local appreciation
Councillor Paul Fuller, who represents the Cowes West and Gurnard ward and is vice-chair of Gurnard Parish Council, welcomed the news. He said,

“This is a fantastic improvement for our community.

“The early completion is a real bonus, and I’m especially pleased to see the path made safer and more accessible for everyone.

“It’s been especially moving to learn the personal story behind this project. A heartfelt thank you to Richard Murphy, whose dedication has truly gone above and beyond.”

Council support
Michelle Love, the council’s service director for highways and community protection, also praised the project. She said,

“We’re thrilled to see the works completed ahead of time.

“This is a great example of partnership working and community investment. Our thanks go to Mr Murphy for his continued support and vision for the site.”
