Unveiling Ryde Esplanade: Road resurfacing project kickstarts this week

Last updated:

Work to resurface Ryde Esplanade is underway.

The work includes removing the existing carriageway surface, laying strengthening materials and then applying the new surface course and road markings.

Beginning this week and ending on Friday 9th June, the work by Island Roads will substantially complete the highways element of the Ryde Interchange project.

Necessary to close sections of the Esplanade
During the works it will be necessary to close sections of the Esplanade between Dover Street and St Thomas’ Street at certain times which, as well as affecting local traffic, it will also impact access to the Bus Station, Ryde Pier and taxis.

On Monday and Tuesday (5th and 6th June) Esplanade bus stops will be moved to temporary locations in lower Union Street.

Work will take place between 7pm and 5am.

Further details are below:

Through traffic – Esplanade
During the overnight works, access through the Esplanade between St Thomas Street and Dover Street may be restricted with local diversions in place. Please leave additional time for journeys in the area.

Southern Vectis bus services
On the nights of Monday 5th June 2023 and Tuesday, 6th June 2023, between 7pm and 5am, buses will operate from a temporary location at the bottom of Union Street, on the west side. At all other times, services will run from the new bus station on the Esplanade.

Taxis
During the works, if the Rose Gardens ranks are not accessible, a temporary taxi rank will be located at the bottom of Union Street, on the east side.

Pier access to FastCat services
There will be no access to and from Ryde Pier for motor vehicles from 8pm until 5am on the evenings of Thursday 1st June 2023, Friday 2nd June 2023 and Monday 5th June 2023. Pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained. The pier will be fully accessible at all other times during the resurfacing.

High friction surfacing
Further works to install high friction road surfaces will take place in the week commencing 19th June.

Please note the above timings are subject to change due to weather and/or unforeseen operational events.
