A new community space specifically for women has opened in Ryde, aiming to offer a calm and judgement-free environment for those aged 18 and over.
The initiative, called Women Only, comes from the team behind Rodger and Steve’s Place, a well-known support hub for men on the Island.
Extending the ethos of support
Founder Karl Hart said the organisation had long considered how it could go further in helping the wider community. Karl said,
“I’ve long felt that, as an organisation, we could do more.
“Over the last three years, the outstanding team at Rodger and Steve’s Place and I have been privileged to support men who have often felt they had nowhere else to turn.”
He added,
“I am immensely proud of every single man who has crossed our threshold, found support, made new friends, or simply sat in peace for a while.”
A new space just for women
The new Women Only space is designed as a relaxed setting where women can simply be — without pressure, form-filling or judgement.
Karl said,
“Women Only is about providing a quiet space where women can be seen, heard and supported.
“A space where our women can walk in as they are, enjoy a hot drink, sit in peace, talk if they want to, seek help or advice, or simply be.”
The service is built on a simple ethos:
“Heard, not lectured to. Supported, not criticised. Understood, not judged.”
Open three times a week
Women Only will be open at the following times:
- Monday: 9am – 12pm
- Wednesday: 12pm – 4pm
- Friday: 4pm – 8pm
It is based at 133 High Street, Ryde, PO33 2RJ, in an informal setting supported by experienced staff and volunteers.
Children are welcome, acknowledging the challenges many women face in accessing support while caring for others.
No barriers to access
There are no forms to fill, no referrals needed, and no cost to attend. Visitors can simply drop in during opening hours.
As Karl explained,
“When you visit, you’ll be greeted by our friendly and welcoming team, ready to listen.
“We offer tea and coffee, along with creative sessions, and a space where there’s no pressure to be anyone other than yourself.”
The Women Only pilot begins on Monday 14th July. Its future will be shaped by feedback from those who use the space.
Karl said,
“We believe support should never come with strings, just warmth, respect, and time.”
