Wroxall Primary School, one of the six primary schools earmarked for closure a year ago by Isle of Wight Council, has been rated ‘Good’ in all areas following its latest Ofsted inspection, held on 1st and 2nd July 2025.
The school, based on Castle Road in Wroxall, has made significant improvements since its previous inspection in 2022, when it was judged to require improvement.
Strong sense of community
Inspectors found that pupils and their families are “incredibly proud” of the school, with many describing it as being at the heart of the community. Parents value the strong communication they receive, as well as the smooth transition procedures that help children settle quickly in the early years.
The school sets clear expectations through rules of being respectful, ready and safe. Inspectors noted that most pupils meet these standards and behave in a hardworking, polite and kind manner.
Curriculum and teaching praised
The report highlights the school’s ambitious and coherent curriculum, particularly in English and mathematics, where pupils’ outcomes have improved since the last published results. Teachers demonstrate strong subject knowledge and use effective resources, including tailored support for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities.
Children in the early years were seen to show curiosity and enthusiasm, working well together and taking pride in their creations. Staff encourage independence, especially in art and design activities.
Reading and writing success
Inspectors found that pupils become fluent readers thanks to skilled staff and a phonics-based approach. Those who need extra help receive timely support. The school fosters a love of reading, with pupils rising to the challenge to “show their reading in their writing”. By Year 6, many pupils demonstrate control and flair as writers.
Robust systems are in place to monitor progress in English and mathematics. However, inspectors noted that such systems are less well developed in some foundation subjects, where leaders lack a full picture of how pupils build knowledge and skills.
Personal development and safeguarding
Pupils enjoy a wide range of opportunities, including residential trips on the Island and to London, which build confidence and independence. They also learn about safety, from road and water awareness to online risks.
The school’s ‘happiness heroes’ promote kindness, while journals help pupils reflect on their emotional well-being. Governors were found to be knowledgeable and supportive, while staff valued the focus on workload and collaborative opportunities with other schools.
Safeguarding arrangements were judged to be effective.
Next steps for improvement
Inspectors concluded that Wroxall Primary should strengthen subject leadership in foundation subjects. They recommended the development of effective systems to evaluate how well pupils are learning across the wider curriculum, ensuring continued improvements in learning.
Special mention should be made for Wroxall Primary’s headteacher, Tara Hopkinson. Ms Hopkinson the school on 1st September 2024 and learnt on 2nd September 2024 that Wroxall Primary had been named for potential closure. The local community fought the closure plans and reopened this week for a new academic year.
