Appley Park:There’s been more success for a Ryde park run by the Isle of Wight Council.

Appley Park has been awarded a prestigious Green Flag for the fifth consecutive year.

The Green Flag scheme is operated by Keep Britain Tidy and to be awarded a flag, open spaces must meet several high standards. This includes good and safe access, be clean and well maintained, have good access to public amenities such as drinking water and toilets and there be regular promotion of the park.

Credit to the staff
George Brown, Isle of Wight Council cabinet member responsible for the environment said “There are very strict standards required to be awarded a Green Flag and it is credit to the staff who work in our parks and countryside that Appley has once again been given this prestigious recognition.

“There has also been an increase in the number of people who use the park over the last year which demonstrates its popularity is increasing amongst residents and visitors.

“The park has been here for almost 220 years and it is very important we maintain our green spaces for the public to enjoy for many more years.”

Officially raised tomorrow
The 2012 Green Flag will be officially raised at Appley Park on Wednesday 18 July at 3pm.

The Green Flag scheme was first set-up by the Civic Trust in 1996 and is recognised as being the benchmark for excellence in recreational green areas.
