British Gas Isle of Wight cycling team tackle 105km Isle of Wight loop for charity

In a remarkable show of endurance, community spirit, and charitable dedication, over 20 colleagues and friends took on the challenge of cycling a full loop around the Isle of Wight in extreme summer heat, raising vital funds for local causes.

105km cycle around the Island
Starting in East Cowes, the group embarked on a 105km clockwise journey around the Island, navigating the rugged terrain and ascending over 1,400 metres.

The route showcased the Island’s stunning coastal cliffs and rolling central downs, with a well-earned lunch break at a traditional country pub offering a brief respite from the blazing sun.

£1,600 raised for charity
This year’s ride raised an impressive £1,660, with additional funds expected through Centrica’s corporate match and the BIG GIVE initiative.

The donations will support Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat (£1,330 estimated) and The Isle of Wight Wave Project (£1,867), continuing a proud tradition of giving back to the community.

Supporters
The event was supported by a host of generous raffle contributors, including Centrica, British Gas, The Duke of York (Cowes), Eurostar, a local carpenter who donated a handcrafted garden chair with a wine shelf, Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, Grazed Knee Cider, Dinosaur Isle, and The Island Holiday Company.

A long-standing commitment to charity
This ride is the latest chapter in a long-standing commitment to charity. Since 2018, the British Gas Isle of Wight cycling team has raised over £16,000 for causes close to their hearts, often inspired by personal stories within the team.

Past beneficiaries include The Brain Tumour Charity, Applegate Breast Care Unit and Testicular Cancer research.

Paul, British Gas IW Leader and one of the ride’s key organisers, was praised for his thoughtful approach to selecting charities and for inspiring support year after year.

“Although the rides feel a little tougher as time goes on, the impact we’re making is what keeps us motivated.”

Lee, British Gas South West England Leader, added,

“It was fantastic to see new faces joining the challenge this year—from employees to friends of employees. Long may it continue!”

Shining a community spotlight on local heroes
As the wheels keep turning, so does the generosity. The cycling team continues to prove that with determination, teamwork, and a shared purpose, even the toughest climbs can lead to meaningful change. By supporting charities, Paul and the team are hoping to shine a Community Spotlight on Supporting Local Heroes on the Isle of Wight.

They’re shining a light on two incredible organisations making waves – literally and figuratively – on the Isle of Wight. Whether you’re looking to give your time or make a donation, here’s how you can get involved and make a real difference.

The Isle of Wight Wave Project is celebrating its tenth year of supporting young people on the Island by reducing anxiety and improving confidence through surfing.

They have also launched one of the Adaptive Surfing Hubs on the Island for people with disabilities who want to try surfing demonstrating that surfing is fully inclusive to all.

Their award-winning surf courses have been proven to help clients feel calmer, more motivated, and better about their future.
