Island Pride: Newport’s Vectis Radio crowned community station of the year at star-studded ARIAS

Newport’s community radio station, Vectis Radio, achieved the gold award in the Community Station of the Year category at the Audio and Radio Industry Awards on Tuesday.

At a glittering event, held in London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane, attended by many hundreds of influential people from the UK radio industry, and more than a few celebrities, Vectis Radio picked up the prestigious gold award as the Community Station of the Year.

Judged by a panel of experts in radio and audio, and organised by The Radio Academy, the ARIAS are the biggest awards in the UK for radio and audio production. The evening was hosted by Rylan and Fleur East.

Mac: The proudest day in the station’s history
Station manager and founder of Vectis Radio, Ian Mac, said,

“This is the proudest day in the station’s history, I am over the moon. Thank you to the Radio Academy for shining a light on Community Radio and indeed Vectis Radio.

“We, like all the other like minded community stations do incredible work in our community on a shoestring budget. To enable us to continue this work, we need your support. Please support us when and if you can, because while awards are always fantastic, they don’t pay the bills.”

Currie: To accept this award still seems surreal
Fellow director, Kelvin Currie said,

“I’m speechless! To stand on that West End stage in front of all those luminaries from UK radio and accept this award still seems surreal.

“This award shows what a small team on a small island can achieve.

“The whole of the Island should be proud.”

Walking up to Wet Leg
As a final touch, the organisers of the event played the hit track, Chaise Longue from Island duo Wet Leg as Ian and Kelvin walked on stage to receive the award.
