Isle of Wight Council urges residents to submit Utility Support Scheme claim forms

Last updated:

The Isle of Wight Council is reminding eligible residents to return their Utility Support Scheme claim forms by the end of February to ensure they receive their payment before the end of March.

During November, Island residents of pensionable age who were claiming Local Council Tax Support, but not receiving Pension Credit were issued with an ‘Invitation to Apply’ letter from the council.

Up to £150 support
Those invited can apply for up to £150 to help with electricity, gas, or water bills.

The scheme has been designed to boost the government’s Winter Fuel Payment, which was automatically issued to those who were entitled to receive it, in December.

Together, these measures aim to support households throughout the entire winter period.

To mirror national Winter Fuel Payment tiers, the council is offering:

  • £150 for residents aged 66 to 79, and
  • £50 for those aged 80 and above.

This ensures eligible households receive a total of £350 when the national and local payments are combined.

Payments from the council began being issued in December and will continue through to March 2026. The council is reassuring residents that all eligible applicants who return their forms on time will receive their support by the end of March.

Lloyd: Many households are feeling the pressure of winter energy costs
Ian Lloyd, the council’s strategic manager for partnerships and support services, said,

“We know many households are feeling the pressure of winter energy costs.

“We want to reassure everyone who has applied that payments are being issued across the winter period, and all eligible residents will receive their support before the end of March.

“Returning claim forms promptly helps us process applications without delay.”

Pre‑paid cards or vouchers
Support will be provided either through pre‑paid cards or vouchers, depending on how the household normally pays for their utilities. These can only be used for their intended purpose.

Residents who are struggling with utility costs but are not eligible for this scheme can still seek help. The Footprint Trust continues to offer independent advice and practical support to Island households facing hardship.
