Isle of Wight seafront concession bid hits snag as council meeting falls short

A street trader looking to open a concession on an  Isle of Wight seafront has had their application stalled.

It comes as the Isle of Wight council’s licensing sub-committee was this morning (Tuesday) unable to determine if The Salty Siren could operate along Princes Esplanade in Gurnard, selling ice cream, drinks, slushies, buckets and spades as well as other items.

The application had been met with nearly 20 objections.

Meeting opened and closed
Council officers, the applicant (Carly Sykes) and objectors turned up to County Hall this morning (Tuesday) to debate the street trader licence but there were not enough councillors present to make any decision.

The meeting was opened by Councillor Michael Beston and then swiftly closed as he said they were unable to continue.

Ben Gard, the authority’s legal officer, advised there must be three councillors present to lawfully conduct business so the meeting will be rescheduled for a later date.

Two out of three
Out of a possible ten councillors who could sit on the sub-committee, only two were present after Councillor Clare Mosdell, the third member who was supposed to attend today’s meeting, sent her apologies.
