Labour Party hopeful throws hat into the East Wight ring

Last updated:

Emily Brothers confirmed today that she is seeking the Labour Party nomination for the new Parliamentary Constituency of Isle of Wight East.

A leading voice for equality nationally, most notably on disability and LGBT+ rights, playing a key role in harmonising equality bodies and laws and went onto lead health and local government programmes for the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

Previous experience
Emily previously stood for Parliament in Sutton and Cheam at the 2015 General election and for the Greater London Assembly a year later.

She is a Sandown Town Councillor, Governor with The Bay primary and secondary schools and is an NHS Governor with Moorfields Eye hospital, leading on building a centre for integrated clinical excellence, education and research.

Brothers: I am frustrated by Government failures and want to make a difference
As applications close for Labour today, Emily said,

“It would be a privilege to represent Isle of Wight East at Westminster, advocating for a ‘Fair Deal’ for residents. Addressing the cost of living crisis, improving public services and tackling climate change will be key priorities for change.

“Communities across East Wight have been failed by the Conservatives: incompetence, inequality, insecurity – so it is time for change.

“Labour offers a progressive set of policies that focus on economic growth, ensuring local people have better financial security; developing our NHS so it is fit for purpose and breaking down barriers to opportunity, ensuring quality education and employment; enabling communities to flourish and make our streets safer.

“Recent flooding and coastal erosion amplify the need to take active steps to address climate change, holding Southern Water and Environment Agency to account. Improving our infrastructure and public transport is essential for island sustainability.

“The cost of living crisis is compounded by expensive ferry fares; shortage in affordable housing is exacerbated by planning blight, whilst public services are stretched. Like most East Wight residents, I am frustrated by these failures and want to make a difference, bringing hope of renewal to our towns and villages.”

Brothers: I will work hard to gain the trust of local people
Polling from Election Maps UK published last week indicates a Labour 2,289 majority and analysis from Electoral Calculus predicts Labour with a 1,144 majority and 58% chance of winning.

Responding to these favourable figures for Labour, Emily said,

“I will work hard to gain the trust of local people because every vote counts, not psephology or collusion.

“Labour is the only progressive alternative to the Conservatives, so we will endeavour to win and secure much needed change.”
