Letter: How does making us drive our Christmas trees to the tip balance with being eco?

It’s that time of year where we all have to think about disposing of our Christmas trees.

I’ve been looking at the IW council’s website trying to figure out what to do this year and scratching my head.

If you happen to already pay them £96/year for the Garden Waste subscription service, you’re in luck, if you pre arrange with them, they’ll pick it up. If you’re not already signed up to it, that route is shut as the scheme is currently closed to new signups.

So what about the options for the rest of us? They seem limited to chopping up your tree and driving it to the tip.

What I can’t figure out is how our council, that voted to recognise the climate emergency, now if making each individual household to drive to the tip, which is miles and miles away, to dispose of their tree.

Surely a system like there used be where we’d take it to a central point in town and drop it in a communal skip would generate far fewer carbon emissions?
