Lifelong astronomer Peter Bassett explores the Isle of Wight’s space legacy: Book now

Last updated:

The Vectis Astronomical Society will host a talk exploring the Isle of Wight’s relationship with space and astronomy on Friday 27th February at 7.30pm.

Peter Bassett will present “Space Island – The Isle of Wight” at Newchurch Pavilion, adjacent to the Isle of Wight Observatory site on Watery Lane, Newchurch.

The society will offer the event in a hybrid format, allowing people to attend in person or view online.

Island’s astronomical heritage
The talk will cover the Island’s connection with Dr Robert Hooke, an associate of Sir Isaac Newton. Peter will also discuss the local astronomical society, observatory, planetarium and dark observing sites.

The presentation will include the history of the Black Arrow rocket, which was built and tested on the Isle of Wight.

Drone footage of related sites and astronomical imaging will feature in the talk.

Speaker’s lifelong passion
Peter Bassett has maintained an interest in astronomy and space since 1968, when Apollo 8 rounded the Moon. He turned his hobby into a mobile planetarium business in 1994, servicing schools across ten counties.

Peter met his wife Amanda in 1998, who shared his passion for both astronomy and the Isle of Wight.

The couple has purchased a lodge near Sandown Airport and recently published books titled “Outer Space Across the UK” and “Budget Travel Isle of Wight”.

Museum connection and anti-conspiracy stance
Peter and Amanda Bassett work with the space section of the Wight Aviation Museum and Peter has developed talks addressing conspiracy theories, which he describes as “a form of anti-education”.

Monthly astronomy meetings
Vectis Astronomical Society meets on the fourth Friday of most months, excluding December. The society opens its talks to non-members for a suggested donation of £2.50.
