Memories of the Sea: Hear more from Isle of Wight diver, Martin Woodward

If you watched part two of the four-part Channel5 series all about the Isle of Wight on Thursday night, you would have seen diver Martin Woodward (pictured above by Julian Winslow).

Despite his age, 74-year-old Martin still regularly dives and last year located the lost canons from the HMS Invincible, which sank off the Island in 1758.

Founder of the Shipwreck Centre and Maritime Museum in Arreton and resident of Bembridge, the programme saw Martin talk about his very important discovery.

Memories of the Sea
If you enjoyed hearing from Martin on the programme this week, you might also be interested in his contribution to the oral history project, Memories of the Sea, which we worked on a few years ago.

This Down to the Coast project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and saw a range of oral histories from 22 Isle of Wight residents connected to the sea, from fishermen to coastguards and harbour masters to divers, there’s a wealth of fascinating and insightful stories to enjoy.

Visit the Website to listen to Martin’s full-length interview, or dip into the short snippets for short stories and check out his photographs.

Back to the TV
The second episode of Isle of Wight: Jewel of the South also featured Paul Griffin from Briddlesford Farm, Helen Butler from the Wight Squirrel Project, singer (and ambassador of the IW) Derek Sandy and Howard Spooner from The George Hotel.

The Island really does look fantastic on the TV screens and should do the trick of attracting more holiday-makers.

The series is narrated by celebrity gardener, Alan Titchmarsh, who has a holiday home and relatives living on the Island.
