Works completed so far include removing the existing walk way, glass panels and frame which links the lift to the cliff top.

By Wednesday this week, it is hoped the temporary bridge will be lifted into place, although much depends on weather conditions.

Councillor Jonathan Bacon, Isle of Wight Council leader, said:

“The scheme to re-open Shanklin Cliff Lift is progressing well and so far all the works are to schedule.

“Providing there are no problems which delay the works, we should be in a position to open the lift to the public from Tuesday 21 July, although we have said all along this is only a projected date. Because contractors are working at height and using a crane, a lot depends on the weather such as wind conditions. If winds are strong then work needs to be suspended for safety reasons.

“However, we remain confident we can meet the identified date for opening.”

While the works are progressing and the lift remains closed, the Shanklin Steamer bus service is in operation which picks up passengers from the town centre and visits the Esplanade.

The council remains committed to a permanent replacement bridge. In May this year, members of the council’s Executive approved proposals to spend over £700,000 on long-term repairs at the lift, including installing a permanent footbridge and replacing the lift’s plant machinery.
