York Avenue closed for three weeks for urgent sewer repair

Southern Water is closing part of York Avenue in East Cowes from 9.30am on Wednesday 7th October 2026 to carry out an urgent sewer repair.

The closure covers the stretch between the junctions with New Barn Road and Adelaide Grove, close to the former Frank James Hospital.

The water company says the repair should cut the risk of sewer blockages and flooding in the area, and give the local network more resilience in the long run.

Diversion via Adelaide Grove and Victoria Grove
Southern Water is sending traffic round via Adelaide Grove and Victoria Grove, with signs marking the route for as long as the works last.

So that the diversion keeps moving, the company is bringing in temporary no-parking restrictions along Adelaide Grove.

Cones will mark out the restricted stretch, and Southern Water asks people not to move them at any point.

Lorries and generators on York Avenue
Crews are setting up a site compound on York Avenue, which will hold welfare facilities for the workforce along with the equipment and materials for the job.

Neighbours should expect more traffic than usual. Lorries and generators, mostly.

Southern Water admits some noise and disruption is unavoidable, but says it will try to keep the inconvenience to residents and road users to a minimum.

Three weeks, weather permitting
The company expects the work to take around three weeks, which would put the finish in the last week of October.

But Southern Water gives its dates as a guide only, and says bad weather or operational demands could push them back.
