Cabinet members assure Ryde residents of action amidst flooding concerns

Councillor Paul Fuller met up with Councillor Lucioni in Ryde on Sunday to discuss and review what actions were being taken by the relevant flood agencies and what could be done to ensure residents were safe and secure and what needed to be done now and going forward into the future.

Councillor Fuller, the Cabinet Member for Planning and Flooding spoke about the extensive work Councillor Lucioni, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, has been doing in Ryde and wanted to see first hand the extent of the flooding and the responses being delivered first hand.

Fuller: Working to ensure communities are protected as well as they can be
Speaking on Monday, Councillor Fuller said,

“I have been shocked by the amount of flooding across the Island and especially in Ryde where entire streets have been affected so badly. For now, I am working with Councillor Lucioni to ensure our communities are protected as well as they can be in extraordinary circumstances and visiting all affected areas around the Island. I know the emergency planning team are managing the whole response to the flooding with great dedication and determination, working with partner agencies to bring about relief to those affected.”

What has failed?
There have been reports of flood barriers not being introduced correctly and claims that pumps have not been working as required.

With weather reports indicating further rainfall in the coming days the emergency planning team have now opened four local hubs for residents to access for help, support, guidance and information.

Lucioni: I will get answers to the questions residents have asked
Councillor Lucioni added,

“The community of Monktonmead, Ryde went through an extraordinary hard and painful experience on Wednesday morning, along with many other places on our Island which will be felt through the community for a very long time. I want to reassure residents and businesses that I will get answers to the questions they have asked and we will find what happened in due course.

“The Council Leader, Councillor Phil Jordan has called for, and promised, a review of the response by all organisations involved in the flooding which will be held once the flooding emergency is finally over.”
