A new book from the Ventnor and District Local History Society offers a glimpse into Godshill’s past through a carefully curated collection of vintage postcards.
Godshill in 99 Old Postcards is the third title in the Society’s growing series, following publications on Ventnor (2023) and Bonchurch (2024).
A snapshot of village life
Although Godshill remained a small rural village for much of the 20th century, its charm and picture-postcard appearance made it a favourite destination for visitors and photographers alike.
The book brings together a selection of postcards from the Society’s archive, providing insight into daily life and gradual changes in the village from the early 1900s through to the 1980s.
Capturing the unchanging charm
Godshill has changed little in appearance over the decades, but the postcards included capture both its enduring features and the subtle developments that took place over time.
Each chapter in the book focuses on a theme, including views from above, All Saints Church, the Batswing, the Model Village, the railway station, pubs, tea rooms, Godshill School and more.
Where to buy
The book is available for £6.50 from the Ventnor Heritage Centre, or online for the same price (plus postage) via the Society’s website.
