Isle of Wight celebrates Jane Austen’s 250th birthday with exciting literary events

This year marks 250 years since the birth of Jane Austen, one of England’s most beloved writers.

To celebrate, the Isle of Wight Library Service is inviting Islanders to take part in a range of events designed to honour her enduring literary legacy.

Austen on screen in Sandown
The celebrations begin at Sandown Library with free monthly film screenings of Jane Austen adaptations.

The next showing will be Sense and Sensibility, taking place on Saturday, 28th June at 1.45pm.

Tickets are free and available directly from the library.

Screenings will continue each month through to October, offering a chance to revisit Austen’s stories on the big screen.

Talks inspired by Austen’s coastal life
On Wednesday 25th June, Helen Howe from the Hampshire branch of the Jane Austen Society will speak at Lord Louis Library.

Her talk, Jane Austen in Hampshire: Naval Connections and Holidays by the Sea, will explore the author’s links to the region and her fondness for the coast.

Tickets cost £3 and are available from the library.

Helen will return later in the year for a festive talk, Jane Austen at Christmas, this time hosted by Ryde Library.

Tea parties and quizzes in Ryde
Ryde Library will hold its own celebration on 17th July with an afternoon of “All Things Jane”.

Guests can enjoy a Regency-style tea party and take part in a quiz designed to test their Austen knowledge.

Everyone is welcome — from dedicated fans to those just discovering her work.

Dance your way back to the Regency era
Later in the year, Lord Louis Library in Newport will welcome the Hampshire Regency Dancers.

They will lead a demonstration and workshop, giving attendees a chance to learn dances from Jane Austen’s time.

No prior experience is needed — just enthusiasm and a willingness to join in.
