Remembering Jim Baldwin: A life devoted to nature conservation on the Isle of Wight

Last updated:

OnTheWight was saddened to hear of the death of Isle of Wight naturalist, Jim Baldwin.

Jim passed away peacefully with friends by his side at Mountbatten Hospice on Friday, 16th May.

Inspirational educator
As well as his involvement with iWatchWildlife, Jim was the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) Regional Rep and British Dragonfly Society (BDS) Recorder for the Island, attending many events where he helped inspire and educate the public about nature.

He helped lead bird walks at Newtown, was an expert on dragon flies and moths, and knew a huge amount about other wildlife, such as swifts.

The day of Jim’s death was ironically the same day that the new Local Nature Recovery Strategy was launched – something Jim would have been a staunch advocate for.

“Will be greatly missed”
Jim’s colleagues at iWatchWildlife said,

“Jim was cherished by many and will be greatly missed.

“His passion for wildlife recording and nature conservation inspired countless others to take an interest in enjoying and protecting our local nature.”

Celebrate Jim’s life
If you knew Jim and would like to be part of the celebration of his life, a funeral service will be held at 12:45pm on Friday 6th June at the Isle of Wight Crematorium.

All are welcome.

Jim’s family have requested donations to Mountbatten Hospice in place of flowers.
