Isle of Wight residents invited to help shape local government structure through survey

A new survey launching next week will give Isle of Wight residents the opportunity to have their say on how local government could be reorganised to better support communities.

The Isle of Wight council is working in partnership with councils across Hampshire, Portsmouth and Southampton to explore how services could be delivered more effectively.

Exploring a new structure
Most of Hampshire currently uses a two-tier system, where separate county and district or borough councils share responsibilities for services.

In contrast, the Isle of Wight already operates as a unitary authority, with the council responsible for all local services.

The proposals under consideration would maintain the Isle of Wight’s unitary status.

On the mainland, the plan is to replace the existing 15 councils with four new unitary councils, simplifying the structure and potentially improving service delivery.

A chance to influence the outcome
The survey will form part of the Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) process and is intended to gather views from residents, businesses, and community organisations.

Feedback will help shape how councils work together in the future across the region.

Further information, including the survey link, will be shared when it goes live next week.

Details about the LGR process are available on the Isle of Wight council’s website.
