Isle of Wight’s Artecology recognised for revolutionary Vertipools™ design and positive impact on biodiversity

Isle of Wight biodiversity experts and trailblazers, Artecology, were recognised this week with the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust’s Innovation for Nature Award

The Wilder Awards shine a spotlight on nature’s superheroes and the award was presented following the Wildlife Trust Conference.

Inventor and manufacturer of Vertipools™
As many readers already know, Artecology is the inventor and manufacturer of Vertipools™. First created ten years ago, these vertical artificial rock pools are proven to provide rich, complex, intertidal habitat, capable of boosting both biodiversity and bio-abundance on concrete, steel or wooden sea defences and other marine infrastructure.

The Isle of Wight is incredibly lucky to have such innovative and pioneering work taking place right here in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

George: It really is a fantastic honour
Speaking after the awards ceremony, Nigel George (pictured above), one of the founders of Artecology, told News OnTheWight,

“When I think about the pressing nature of the critical issues now confronting both humanity and wildlife on a global scale, there are times when receiving accolades for our work seems somewhat insignificant.

“However, the significance of this Wilder Award for Innovation bestowed upon Artecology by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is different, in fact for me it holds profound importance because to receive recognition from a regional organisation that oversees some of the most remarkable and intricate wildlife conservation initiatives in our locality, really is a fantastic honour.”

More awards
But the accolades don’t end there, Ian Boyd — who founded Arc Consultancy and Artecology in 2014 — also picked up the Wild Card Award in 2022 award at HIWWT’s first Wilder Annual Awards!

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust make a great contribution to the Isle of Wight Biosphere through their own Team Wilder initiative, encouraging Islanders to take actions so we can all benefit from a healthy environment.
