An illustrated talk at Ventnor Arts Club later this month will offer a unique insight into the Dickens family holiday in Bonchurch in 1849.
Presented by local Bonchurch researcher and Dickens expert Sue Lowday, A Sit-Down Tour – The Dickens Family Holiday in Bonchurch, 1849 takes place on Monday 21st July.
Exploring Dickens’ time on the Island
The talk explores Charles Dickens’ stay in Bonchurch during the summer of 1849.
Sue will highlight the locations, people and experiences that influenced his time there, and how they may have shaped elements in two of his later novels, David Copperfield and Great Expectations.
A chance to enjoy the history without the hills
Designed for those who may not want to tackle Bonchurch’s steep terrain, the event invites attendees to explore the area’s literary history from the comfort of a seat.
The talk uses images and storytelling to bring Dickens’ holiday vividly to life.
