Letter: Labour’s digital ID mandate is a control mechanism that impacts personal freedom and healthcare access

OnTheWight always welcomes a Letter to the Editor to share with our readers – unsurprisingly they don’t always reflect the views of this publication. If you have something you’d like to share, get in touch and of course, your considered comments are welcome below.

This from Harry, 31, a Nurse from Newport. Ed

Ever read the news and feel like it’s being written by George Orwell? Well yesterday was one of those days…

I am very concerned by Labour’s recent announcement about mandating digital ID, and I wanted to explain why.

Many things in life require a licence. If you wish to drive, then you must seek the authority of the state and get a driving licence. This proves you have the right to drive, and gives the state the authority to revoke that right should you breach the rules. And this makes sense to me, it keeps us safe, and is an optional choice.

Likewise with international travel, you need a passport. This can be revoked if the state wish you not to travel.

A licence to exist?
An ID is simply a licence to exist. The authority to grant this lies not with the state.

Already, within hours of the announcement, Labour MPs are on the TV saying how it can be used to stop the wrong sort of people accessing healthcare. As a nurse, I cannot stress how disturbing and sinister this is. Who decides who gets treatment? Who decides who has the right to exist or not? Do you trust this government? Would you trust the next government (likely led by Farage?).

This is about control. And our freedom is inately our own, we must protect it.

There is no good reason for digital ID. Only very sinister ones.

Think about its use
Imagine the police stopping you in the street, and demanding you present an online ID, and being legally obliged to do so.

Imagine needing emergency medicine and them asking for your ID at the door.

No. No. No.

Petition heading towards 750,000 signatures
Over 350,000 signed a petition against this in just a few hours and that figure almost doubled 24 hours later (621,168 at time of publishing).

No-one wants this, apart from those who stand to profit, and believe you me, that’s not us.

We must my comply.
