Listed building consent sought to carry out repairs on Old Radar Station

A former World War Two radar station at one of the Isle of Wight’s highest points could undergo ‘essential repair work’, ensuring its ‘continued survival’.

Howard Carter has lodged a Listed Building Consent application for repairs to the Grade II listed Old Radar Station on St Boniface Down above Ventnor. The buildings were the subject of a complete architectural reconstruction and renovation in 2016 and were Grade II listed in 2014.

Repairing weather damaged structure
The aim of the proposal is to ‘stabilise and repair’ parts of the structure which have ‘deteriorated over time’ because of weathering, a statement from Thinking Space Architects says.

These include the brickwork of the main receiver building and low retaining wall and concrete retaining walls.

The statement says,

“Ventnor Radar Station played a significant role in the Battle of Britain and is a poignant reminder of this crucial period of our history.

“The existing buildings are simple and robust, but some elements require repair to prevent further, possibly accelerating, deterioration and allow them to function properly.

“The repairs proposed here would retain the building’s appearance, special interest and character while ensuring its continued survival.”

Grand Design
The dwelling was put up for sale earlier this year, after appearing in the opening shots of an episode of Grand Designs (GD). According to RightMove website, it has been sold subject to contract.

The GD programme featured the story of Sarah and Howard, an interior designer and architect, who were building a radical new floating home on Shoreham Beach, West Sussex.

The couple, whose agency is known as Thinking Space, were also responsible for the design of the converted radar station in Ventnor on St Boniface Down.
