St Helens Historical Society hosts ‘Smugglers and Wreckers’ talk by Dr Angela Buckley

On Thursday 20th November the St Helens Historical Society is hosting a public talk entitled ‘Smugglers and Wreckers’ by the crime historian and author, Dr Angela Buckley.

Angela will talk about how smuggling became a way of life for Islanders and their communities in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the legacy it has left here.

Angela has written several books about crime, her most recent being The Bermondsey Murder: Scotland Yard’s First Great Challenge and Dickens’ Inspiration.

She has appeared on ‘The One Show’ on BBC One, and ‘Celebrity Antiques Road Trip’ and ‘The Secret Genius of Modern Life’ on BBC Two.

Where and when
The venue is the Community Centre, Guildford Road, St Helens PO33 1UH, and the meeting will begin at 7.30pm.

Entrance is free to members, £3 to non-members – cash only please.

There will be refreshments, raffle, and the opportunity to join the St Helens Historical Society: membership is £10, giving free entry to all speaker events for the coming year.
