It’s been a few years since he was last performing on the Island, but the Quay Folk Club is very pleased to say that Anthony John Clarke is back – for one night only he is the Club guest at 7pm on Sunday 18th May at the Quay Arts Centre in Newport.
Known as AJ to his friends, he regularly comperes at Fairport Convention’s Cropredy Festival taking the 20,000 faithful through the musical delights on offer.
A “National Treasure”
Described by Fairport Convention as a “National Treasure” he has been an integral part of the UK folk scene for many years. Coming originally from Northern Ireland and now living in Southport, he has played at folk clubs and festivals all over the UK and beyond, and has a number of albums to his name including his latest called the Ultimate Collection.
AJ first emerged on the folk scene with his songs ‘The Broken Years,’ about the Northern Irish troubles, and ‘The Only Life Gloria Knows’ about homelessness. Now, however, he is seen as one of the most humorous and entertaining acts around. Audiences cannot resist the musical invitations to sing from this true gentleman of the music world.
Wide range of topics
Expect a degree of sentiment, but also songs covering topics from the Man From Uncle to Car Boot Sales, Presidents, Karaoke Nights, Nuns, Grandchildren and how to avoid them (he has at least five), Camping, Bigots, and Hitchhiking.
One reviewer commented that this man is perhaps the funniest at serious songs and the most serious about funny songs. You’ll certainly enjoy the ride with AJ – this will be a night to remember.
Bentley: Unique style of modern folk songs
As Folk Club organiser John Bentley said,
“You’ll be hard pushed to find a more entertaining and engaging folk singer than Antony John Clarke.
“He has his own unique style of modern folk songs with words that conjure up pictures of life, painted with humour and a not insignificant touch of the old blarney.”
With support from “2gether in Harmony” entry to the Folk Club is free, but donations are sought (and expected!!)
