Community gathers for RNLI boat naming in East Cowes, honouring a generous legacy

On Friday, the RNLI held a boat naming ceremony at the Inshore Lifeboat Centre in East Cowes.

The event marked the official naming of the new inshore lifeboat, which will play a vital role in saving lives at sea.

Ceremony details
Glyn Ellis conducted the ceremony, while Alex Cohen, one of the technicians at the inshore lifeboat station, carried out the official naming.

Music was provided by the Cowes Concert Band, joined by the Slipshod Singers. Reverend Tony Lawrence led the service.

Honouring a legacy
The lifeboat has been named Richard Peter McFarland in memory of the late husband and son of Mrs Pauline Ivy Lucille McFarland.

Mrs McFarland, who lived in Worthing and died in November 1979, left the whole of her estate to the RNLI. Her generosity funded this lifeboat, ensuring her family’s name will be remembered through its life-saving work.

Our thanks to Councillor Karl Love for sharing his photos of the event.
