New ‘Headspace’ exhibition opens at Department in Ryde, showcasing costume headpieces

A new exhibition titled ‘Headspace’ has opened at Department in Ryde, inviting visitors to explore the art and meaning of masking through a display of costume headpieces.

The exhibition opened last Friday and runs until 7th February 2026, with free entry for all visitors.

Exploring the art of transformation
The works on display draw on more than 37 years of Shademakers’ practice, reflecting influences from ancient traditions and Carnival culture.

The exhibition explores themes of transformation, mystery and storytelling, with each piece presenting its own narrative history alongside selected archival material.

Meet the maker behind the masks
Pop in and discover a stunning range of costume headpieces made by the organisation’s Artistic Director, Paul McLaren.

Visitors can look beyond the surface of the masks and consider the layered identities and hidden themes they reveal.

When to visit
The exhibition runs until 7th February 2026, open from Tuesdays to Saturdays, between 9.30am and 5pm.
