With brighter days and warmer temperatures returning to the Island, Golden Hill Country Park is coming alive – and there has never been a better excuse to pull on your walking boots and head out to explore.
The park, which sits in Freshwater and surrounds one of the famous Palmerston Follies built to defend the Solent from invasion, opened to the public in 1970 after nearly a century of military use stretching from 1863 to 1962.
Something for every walker
Visitors can choose from several waymarked routes to suit all abilities and interests.
The Red Squirrel route offers a shorter option, while the Wildlife Walk takes in open grassland, woodlands and ponds across a longer circuit.

For those after a view, the Viewpoint Walk delivers stunning vistas towards Yarmouth and beyond – a reminder of just how spectacular this corner of the Island can be on a clear spring day.
A carpet of colour underfoot
Early spring brings a spectacular floral display throughout the park’s glades, with primroses and cowslips emerging alongside the first purple orchids of the season.
A dawn chorus worth stopping for
The park’s birdlife also rewards those who take the time to listen. Jays, woodpeckers, robins, blue tits, song thrushes, goldcrests, chaffinches and sparrowhawks all call the park home, while wood pigeons and collared doves add their gentle coo to the mix.
High above the Solent, herring gulls complete the soundscape – a reminder that the sea is never far away on the Isle of Wight.
With the weather finally on our side, Golden Hill Country Park deserves a place at the top of your weekend plans.
