Brading Roman Villa is seeking to recruit up to four new trustees to strengthen the board and help shape the future of one of the finest Roman sites in the UK.

Situated overlooking Sandown Bay on the Isle of Wight, Brading Roman Villa is one of the finest Roman sites in the UK. Our award-winning Visitor Centre and Museum offer unique insights into Roman life in Britain from beautifully preserved mosaic floors to an extensive collection of Roman archaeology. While our cafe, events and workshops help to make the museum a community hub.

The museum has a small team of talented staff supported by volunteers. The site is owned and administered by the Brading Roman Villa Trust. The board meets bi-monthly and is supported by three sub-committees made up of trustees and museum staff:

  • Finance, Governance and Operations
  • Audience and Museum Development
  • Fundraising

Together, the trustees provide strategic leadership, governance and oversight to ensure the museum is sustainable and continues to prosper for future generations.

Trustee opportunities
We are looking for up to another four trustees to help move Brading Roman Villa forward as we work towards increasing access and developing community use, alongside balancing the demands of a tourist attraction with the needs of a notable historic site.

We are seeking trustees who have skills and experience in the commercial and/or heritage sector in:

  • Fundraising and sponsorship
  • Legal
  • Property/land management
  • Museum administration/curation

Number of meetings per annum/time commitment

  • Six board meetings per annum
  • Approximately 2-3 days per month

This includes attendance at daytime board meetings, participation in at least one sub-committee, preparation time and occasional attendance at museum events.

Selection criteria to recruit trustees is that they:

  • Have a passion for heritage
  • Have appropriate skills or experience to add to and expand the skills-base of the present board
  • Have relevant experience, such as being a governor or trustee of an arts organisation or charity (desirable but not essential) and/or commercial organisation
  • Are understanding and supportive of the Brading Roman Villa’s Forward Plan (business and strategy), Accreditation commitments, aims and objectives
  • Have the time and availability to commit to the role. Regular attendance at board meetings is crucial to the smooth governance of the organisation.

The trust can facilitate remote attendance if appropriate, and we are happy to consider applications from potential trustees who are not local to the Isle of Wight.
