Teddy's medal design made into real medal

Teddy Hobbs’ winning medal design to celebrate Mountbatten Isle of Wight’s Schools Walk

Binstead Primary pupil, Teddy Hobbs, is the proud winner of Mountbatten Isle of Wight’s Schools Walk medal design competition.

In assembly, on Friday, 25th April, Mountbatten’s deputy CEO, Becky McGregor, presented Teddy with the first medal to feature his design.

Teddy explained,

“I wanted to make a medal all about Mountbatten and what they actually do.

“My design is the Isle of Wight, with The Needles on one side and an aeroplane on the other. I was thinking about the colours and where to place every detail.”

Teddy was very surprised to find his design had won — beating hundreds of entries and a final shortlist of around ten.

Around 1,000 medals will be created in Teddy’s design and they will be presented to those who complete the Schools Walk, during Walk the Wight on Sunday, 11th May.

Learning how many people will receive one of these specially created medals, Teddy said,

“It feels very weird, because I’m not used to it.”

He was also handed a certificate and a copy of his original design.

The Schools Walk
Mountbatten Isle of Wight’s Schools Walk is one of a number of ways to Walk the Wight. The 26.5 mile main walk, the eight-mile flat walk and two half walks (starting and finishing at Carisbrooke) will also take place in less than a fortnight.

Sign up before 9am on 8 May, to pay £15 and collect your walker number at your chosen start line, via the website.

The Schools Walk sees school children hop, skip, bike, jump or run the required distance in the lead-up to the big day, before completing the last four miles from Freshwater Bay to Alum Bay, over Tennyson Down.

So chuffed”
Teddy’s mum, Jools Hobbs, said,

“We’re very surprised but chuffed for Teddy. He worked so hard on it. The hospice means so much to us.

“My auntie worked there many years ago and we’ve had family use the services. For Teddy to win this is fabulous!”

McGregor: A tough choice
Becky McGregor said,

“Picking the final design was a tough choice — the entries were so creative and thoughtfully considered.

“I loved the detail on Teddy’s image. His inspirational quote, ‘I made a difference,’ encapsulates everything Walk the Wight stands for.

“Every sign-up, every step and every pound raised helps our expert staff deliver vital end-of-life care to Islanders who need us.”
