Isle of Wight Council’s first Green Party group formed after May 2026 elections

After five years working with a large team of Independents at County Hall, the first ever Green Party group on the Isle of Wight Council has been formed, with Councillor Claire Critchison (Chale, Niton and Shorwell) being re-elected for a second term, and Councillor Vix Lowthion (Carisbrooke and Gunville) who will be sitting in the County Hall Chamber for the first time.

Green priorities
The Green Party group will prioritise improved transport links, including bus, rail and cycle routes, and will work closely with community groups to get better ferry services for islanders.

They will look to improve water quality across the island, including our coasts and rivers, and improve road safety through establishing quiet roads in rural areas.

Across party lines
The experienced Green councillors will work across party lines towards financial sustainability for the Council, whilst prioritising the equality of health and education outcomes for islanders, including for SEND children.

Greens pledge to listen
Councillor Critchison, Green group leader, says,

“This new council represents the full spectrum of political parties and independents and has a vital opportunity to improve the lives of residents.

“Green councillors will always work collaboratively with any councillors who share our aims of equality and fairness, putting our environment and the needs of vulnerable islanders first.

“As a new group, we look forward to getting to work in County Hall – we are always listening and we welcome residents to get in touch if they need our support.”

Full Council meets today (Wednesdsay) at 6pm at County Hall, Newport.
