New chairman of Isle of Wight council outlines vision for the coming year

Councillor Ian Dore has been elected as the new Chairman of the Isle of Wight council, stepping into the role with what he calls “humility, purpose, and, of course, my best boots forward.”

Known for his colourful background that spans military service, radio broadcasting and charity work, Councillor Dore described his election as a surprise.

A close result on the night
He admitted,

“My first words were, ‘I didn’t expect that’.

“There’s always a chance, but it was never a given. On the night, it went my way by two votes — and here we are. The boy from Binstead, now wearing the chain. It’s still sinking in.”

His nomination was put forward by Councillor Geoff Brodie and seconded by Councillor Karen Lucioni.

Councillor Jonathan Bacon also offered his support, and MP Richard Quigley praised Councillor Dore’s dedication to public service, especially his work as the council’s Armed Forces Champion.

Councillor Vanessa Churchman was elected vice-chairman.

Tribute to predecessor
In his first speech as chairman, Councillor Dore paid tribute to outgoing chairman Councillor Karl Love. He said,

“Karl brought real energy to the role.

“He served with enthusiasm and a commitment that left a mark on this chamber and the wider community.

“It’s only right to recognise that service as we look ahead to the year to come.”

A new chapter begins
With a full chamber and a busy meeting ahead, Councillor Dore wasted no time in outlining his approach.

“I’ve always believed in duty, discipline, and service. This role is a continuation of that.

“It’s a privilege to represent the council and the Island, and I’ll do my utmost to ensure this chamber remains a place where all voices are respected and heard.”

From soldier to civic figurehead
Councillor Dore’s background is far from conventional. He served in the Gulf War and Northern Ireland before becoming a DJ and radio presenter on stations including Isle of Wight Radio, Power FM and Bath FM.

He also launched Youth Radio Rocks to give young people a platform, and has worked with charities including Macmillan Cancer Support and Mind.

Most recently, he has led the organisation of the Isle of Wight Armed Forces Day.

Gratitude to the community
Councillor Dore said,

“I’m incredibly grateful for the support of my fellow councillors and the residents of Binstead and Fishbourne.

“Without their trust in 2021, I wouldn’t have this opportunity.

“I take the responsibility seriously.”
